"its need nothing"
I emailed the guy:
Hi, I might be interested in checking out your Pathfinder.
I know it's annoying to have to answer a bunch of questions, because I've also tried selling a car on craigslist. But if you could answer just a couple for me, I'd really appreciate it.
1. What kind of service have you had done on it? Brakes, timing belt, transmission, etc.?
2. What kind of tires are on it, and what kind of shape are they in?
Thanks!
Then I pretty quickly (and late at night) got this response:
I'm just buying and selling cars I just got last week I didn't put anything on it cuz it's need nothing
Sent from my iPhone
"it's need nothing"
At least he is consistent.

I would definitely schedule a meeting to look at the truck, and bring the police with me.

"cuz it's need nothing" how hard is it to type out a decent sentence especially since every mobile device mobile device basically has a full keyboard and spelling/grammar correct.

ask for a picture of the ignition. if it looks punched in, find a different pathfinder or an xterra or something.
Some unsolicited buying advice, If you see a nice looking xterra that was build around the same time and costs about the same amount of money, get it. Unless you need to haul a family, you can get away with driving an SUV that's about 85% the size of the pathfinder that probably gets marginally better gas milage and accelerates faster.

It could just be a scam. But the scams around here are normally higher priced used cars unexplainably listed for "$2990." Like a two-year-old Camry or a Jeep Wrangler.

I bought one last winter with 220k on it for 2k and all I've done to it is replace some ujoints and change the fluids, so... I think it's just a decent deal.
He undoubtedly bought it at an auction and may not have even given it a look over.
I would thoroughly go over it and have a mechanic inspect it before buying but definitely sounds like a good deal.
I'd try to get a carfax on it as well. Could be one of the flood victims that are still surfacing.

Plenty of people actually do this as a side business. If he has the title to sign over to you, it shouldn't be a concern. I just bought one very similar (an '03 with 150k), and am really happy with it so far. Seems like a good price for a 4x4 in good condition.

I'm not interested in Xterras of similar vintage because I want full-time 4wd. This would be my winter car, if I decide to replace the old Grand Cherokee I have now but needs some not-insignificant repairs.

lots of scammers on craigslist, if they cant give you an answer directly, forget & move on, as it isnt worth wasting time to try to talk to either an idiot, foreigner that cant speak language good enough to discuss vehicle, or a scammer.
also lots of vehicles without titles!!!!!!! people get title loans & then lose title & try to sell vehicle without title. I see it all the time.
any vehicle you get, comfirm title matches the VIN number on dash & look to make sure VIN number hasnt been tampered with. some vehicles it attaches to dash & a simple dash swap & vehicle has a new vin. from a junker to a "stolen" vehicle.
another thing, alot of people sell vehicles with open titles, where they buy, & fix, & re-sell without having it titled in their name, there can be snags, & I recomend confirming the identification of person selling it, to the name on title, & title to VIN on vehicle.
also if you need financing on vehicle your buying, if persons name on title isnt the person selling it to you, they cant sell it to you, since only the "legal owner" can sell it, when they have to go to bank or financing company to sign the paperwork. so its strictly cash only.
